Google Ads PPC in 2026: What Still Works When AI Answers Sit Above the Ads

Quick answer

Google Ads still works in 2026, but the page has changed. AI Overviews and AI Mode answer many questions before the ads, and AI Mode itself now shows text ads on almost 30% of commercial queries in one large study. What works: tight intent-based campaigns, landing pages that continue the AI answer, first-party conversion data fed back to Google, and judging success on cost per qualified lead.

What changed on the results page

For years a Google results page was simple: ads at the top, organic results below. In 2026 many commercial searches open with an AI answer. In AI Mode, Google now places sponsored text ads inside or around the AI response.

SE Ranking tested 50,032 US commercial keywords in June 2026 and found text ads in AI Mode on 29.45% of them. Ad presence rose with the price of the keyword, as the figure shows.

Share of keywords showing a text ad in AI Mode, by CPC
  • Under $224.3%
  • $2 to $1032.5%
  • $10 and over53.6%

The takeaway: the most valuable keywords are where Google is placing ads into AI answers fastest. If you sell something expensive, your ads will increasingly appear next to an AI summary.

What still works

  • Intent first structure. Campaigns built around what the buyer is trying to do, with exact and phrase match for your money terms and broad match only where you have strong conversion data.
  • Landing pages that continue the answer. The visitor has often read an AI summary already. Give them the specific detail the summary could not: price ranges, availability, proof, a way to book.
  • First party conversion data. Import offline conversions from your CRM so bidding learns from qualified leads and sales, not form fills.
  • Consent Mode v2. In the UK and EU, measurement without consent signals is incomplete. Our Consent Mode v2 guide explains why.
  • Brand protection. Your own brand terms still convert best and stop competitors appearing above you.

What to stop doing

  • Judging campaigns on click-through rate when AI answers change how people click.
  • Sending ads to a generic homepage.
  • Optimising to form submissions that sales never qualifies.
  • Letting automated campaigns run with no negative keywords or exclusions.

Where the budget goes now

WordStream's 2026 benchmarks, based on 13,474 US search campaigns, put the median cost per click at $5.42 and the median cost per lead at $66.69. For the first time in five years, the average cost per lead went down, as conversion rates rose in most industries. Clicks are not getting cheaper, but well run accounts are converting them better.

That supports a simple rule: spend your effort on what happens after the click. Better pages and better conversion data are now worth more than another round of bid changes.

Pair paid search with AI visibility

Paying for an ad does not get you cited in the AI answer. In the same SE Ranking study, advertisers had no citation advantage over comparable sites that did not advertise. The answer depends on your content and reputation. The strongest position is to appear in both: cited in the answer and present in the ads. Read more in AI search visibility vs CPC.

What this looks like in practice

For Zegaz Instruments, an industrial gas analyser maker, we run Google Ads on a small budget alongside SEO and GEO. Its ads hold the top one or two paid positions for key terms such as "hydrocarbon dew point analyser", while the organic and AI visibility work builds the trust behind them.

How OUNTERNET helps

Our performance marketing service runs Google Ads, Meta and LinkedIn judged on booked calls, from £2,500 a month. Ad spend is paid to the platform. Prices exclude VAT. Final price after we analyse your business and scope. Apply for a call and we will review your account first.
